Large Storm Sweeps Across Minnesota: July 13th, Hail and High Winds

On July 13th, a powerful storm system barreled through Minnesota, bringing with it severe weather conditions that wreaked havoc across multiple counties. The storm was characterized by high winds and large hail, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The following is an account of the storm’s impact, accompanied by detailed hail maps that illustrate the severity of the event.

Storm Overview

On the evening of July 13th large storms developed over NW Minnesota and moved southeast across the state into Wisconsin. The Minneapolis-St Paul Airport recorded windspeeds of 62 MPH and there was even a brief tornado documented in Rice County. These conditions led to significant damage to property, vehicles, and crops, as well as numerous power outages.

St. Paul And Eastern Twin Cities Metro

The first map focuses on the Eastern Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro region, showing significant hail activity around Maplewood, Lake Elmo, and Woodbury. Hail sizes in this area reached up to 1.75 inches, causing extensive damage to homes, vehicles, and outdoor structures.

Southern MN

The second map depicts southern Minnesota, where towns like Kilkenny, Morristown, Nerstand, and Kenyon experienced the brunt of the storm. In Nerstrand, hailstones reached an astonishing 3.50 inches, accompanied by wind gusts that downed trees and power lines.

NW Twin Cities Metro and Central Minnesota

The final map shows central Minnesota, with severe weather affecting areas from St. Cloud to Monticello. Hail sizes here were recorded up to 3.00 inches, with Buffalo and Monticello seeing some of the largest hailstones. High winds in this region compounded the damage, flattening crops and causing structural damage to buildings.
